Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about StemSplitter audio stem separation.

General Questions

What is audio stem separation?

Audio stem separation is the process of isolating individual instrument tracks (stems) from a mixed audio file. For example, separating vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano, and other instruments from a complete song.

What audio formats does StemSplitter support?

StemSplitter supports the following audio formats: MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC. Please upload audio files only.

Do I need to create an account?

No account required! You can start using StemSplitter immediately. Simply upload your audio file and download your separated stems.

Is StemSplitter free?

Yes! StemSplitter is currently free to use with the following limits:

  • 3 free trials per day - Process up to 3 audio files daily
  • 50MB maximum - Each audio file can be up to 50MB in size

These limits reset every 24 hours. We're planning to introduce paid plans in the future with longer limits and faster processing.

Usage & Limits

What are the free trial limits?

Free users can:

  • Process up to 3 audio files per day
  • Upload files up to 50MB in size

These limits reset every 24 hours at midnight UTC.

How long does processing take?

Processing time depends on the size and complexity of your audio file:

  • Small files (<10MB): 1-2 minutes
  • Medium files (10-30MB): 2-4 minutes
  • Large files (30-50MB): 3-5 minutes

You can leave the page open or close it—processing continues in the background. Just return later to download your stems.

What happens if I exceed the daily limit?

If you've used all 3 free trials for the day, you'll need to wait until the next day (midnight UTC) to process more files. We're working on paid plans that will offer unlimited processing.

Quality & Results

What quality can I expect?

Our AI-powered separation provides high-quality results with minimal artifacts. The quality depends on:

  • The quality of your source audio file
  • The complexity of the mix
  • The clarity of individual instruments in the original

Most users are satisfied with the output quality, especially for vocals and drums.

Which stems are separated?

StemSplitter separates audio into 6 distinct stems:

  • Vocals: Isolated vocal track
  • Drums: Percussion and rhythm section
  • Bass: Low-frequency bass lines
  • Guitar: Guitar and string instruments
  • Piano: Piano and keyboard instruments
  • Others: All other instruments and sounds not categorized above

Can I preview stems before downloading?

Yes! After processing completes, you can preview each stem online using the built-in audio player. This lets you check the quality before downloading.

In what format are the stems provided?

All separated stems are provided in MP3 format, which is compatible with all major audio editing software and DAWs.

Download & Usage

How do I download the separated stems?

After processing completes, you have two options:

  • Download Individual Tracks: Click the download icon on any stem to download that specific track
  • Download All as ZIP: Click "Download All (ZIP)" to get all 6 stems in one convenient ZIP file

How long are my files stored?

Your uploaded files and separated stems are stored temporarily on our servers and automatically deleted after 24 hours. Make sure to download your stems within this time period.

Can I use the separated stems commercially?

You own the rights to the separated stems, but you must ensure you have the rights to the original audio file. Always respect copyright laws and obtain proper licenses for commercial use. StemSplitter is a tool—you are responsible for ensuring you have the legal right to use the source material.

Can I edit the separated stems?

Absolutely! The separated stems are standard MP3 files that can be imported into any audio editing software, DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), or music production tool. Use them for remixing, sampling, karaoke, or any creative project.

Future Plans

Will there be paid plans?

Yes, we're planning to introduce paid plans in the future with:

  • Longer audio file limits (up to full songs)
  • Faster processing times
  • Priority support
  • Unlimited daily processing

Free users will always have access to basic features with the current limits.

Will you add more stem types?

We're always working to improve StemSplitter. Adding more stem types (like strings, brass, etc.) is a possibility for future updates. Stay tuned!
